Hayes back in court Sept. 10 to set date for trial

A Halifax man accused of defrauding the Sipekne’katik Band will be back in court September 10 to set a date for trial.

The lawyer for Jeffrey Cecil Hayes, 60, appeared on behalf of his client before Justice Glen McDonnell in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Halifax August 6. Hayes has elected to be tried by a judge and jury.

The former director of finance for the Sipekne’katik Band is charged with four counts of possession property obtained from crime, fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and breach of trust.

The offences are alleged to have occurred between July 2009 and December 2010 while Hayes worked at the Sipekne’katik Band Office in Indian Brook First Nation, N.S.
