The former chief of the Sipekne’katik Band in Nova Scotia has been charged with drug trafficking following an RCMP traffic stop.
Jerry Francis Sack, 55, of Indian Brook First Nation has been charged with four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance.
According to a news release, the RCMP stopped a vehicle along Indian Road near Indian Brook First Nation, while conducting a targeted traffic stop on Oct. 6.
Police say Sack, who was sitting in the passenger’s seat, was found with “a significant quantity” of prescription pills including hydromorphone, Dialaudid and Percocet. Sack was arrested, charged and released from custody later that day.
A woman who was driving the vehicle was not implicated in the offence, police said.
Sack is scheduled to appear in Truro Provincial Court on Nov. 27.
Sack was a longtime serving band councillor with the Sipekne’katik Band. He was first elected to band council in 1988 and remained in that position until 2007 when he was elected as chief.
Sack served as chief until 2012 when he chose to run for a council seat instead. He didn’t run for re-election to council in the band’s last election in November 2016.
