About Maureen Googoo
Maureen Googoo is Mi’kmaq from the Indian Brook First Nation and a member of the Sipekne’katik Band in Nova Scotia. A born storyteller, Maureen has been working in journalism for nearly 30 years. She has worked as reporter, editor and producer in radio, television, print and online news. Throughout her career, Maureen has worked for news media outlets such as:
- The Micmac News
- CBC Radio in locations such as Halifax, Sydney, Toronto and La Ronge, Sask.
- The Chronicle-Herald newspaper in the Halifax newsroom as well as the Dartmouth and Truro bureaus
- The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network in the Halifax News Bureau
In 2008, Maureen Googoo was the recipient of the Adrienne Clarkson Diversity Award with the Association of Electronic Journalists for a radio documentary she produced for CBC Radio Atlantic about two Aboriginal groups in Nova Scotia seeking official recognition from the federal government.
Maureen was also part of the news team at the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network that won a 2003 Native American Journalists Association award for a television news special on the fourth anniversary of the 1999 Supreme Court of Canada decision in the Donald Marshall commercial fishery case.
Maureen Googoo has a degree in Political Science from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, a post-graduate journalism degree from Ryerson University in Toronto and a Master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City.

Stephen Brake is a professional photographer from Halifax, N.S. and the Photo Editor for Kukukwes.com. Stephen has nearly 30 years of experience in photography.
Stephen graduated from NSCAD University in Halifax with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and a minor in Graphic Design. While he was studying at NSCAD, he spent a semester at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City.
